WHAT IS SEMAGLUTIDE?
Semaglutide is an injectable medication designed to support weight loss by mimicking the hormone GLP-1, which regulates appetite and enhances feelings of fullness. By increasing GLP-1 levels, semaglutide helps reduce food intake, promoting effective weight loss. It is commonly prescribed for individuals with Type 2 Diabetes or a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher and is most effective when paired with a reduced-calorie diet and regular exercise. Semaglutide is administered as a weekly subcutaneous injection.
HOW DOES SEMAGLUTIDE COMPARE TO OTHER WEIGHT LOSS MEDICATIONS?
Semaglutide has generated significant interest due to the impressive weight loss seen in clinical trials and its FDA approval. While typical weight loss with other medications averages around 5% to 10%, semaglutide may offer a more effective option for many individuals.
In the largest clinical trial involving adults, participants lost an average of about 15% of their initial body weight over 68 weeks (nearly 16 months). Another study in adolescents showed an average weight loss of 16% over the same period.
While oral weight loss medications are generally more affordable than injectables, they may not yield the same degree of weight loss. Let’s take a closer look at popular weight loss medications and how they compare to semaglutide.
